Give a Boy a Gun

Read this for school

This was such a chore to read. Part of it is due to the age of the book, but most just the way it was written. The disjoined ‘report-like’ writing style was really grating and I disliked how a lot of the circumstances in the book were portrayed. Most grievous, however, was the afterword and all the other elements that were way too academic to fit the teen audience this book is meant to address. Honestly it is unclear if that is even the case. Overall a really unsatisfactory read.

Ban guns and please, please stop bullying forever.

After reading this, you'll never want to become a teacher in the US.

I decided to pick this up because of the current climate in terms of gun control and mass shootings. This book wasn’t the best written thing I’ve ever read, but I think it did a good job of showing all sides of a story. I do think within this particular story there was too much blaming on the victims and not enough on the two boys themselves, kind of giving the two boys a free pass.

Overall I still think this is an important book and an important topic and should be discussed person to person and within books. And I would recommend giving this a read if you are able to disconnect yourself from some of the bias present in this book.
