Ich erinnere mich noch an die Bestürzung, als ich noch in der Schule war und in Erfurt Schüler ihre Schule stürmten. Niemand konnte sich vorstellen, dass dieses „amerikanische Phänomen” auch in Deutschland Einzug halten könnte. Aber natürlich wird auch an deutschen Schulen gemobbt und gequält und ich glaube nicht, dass es da in unserem Gymnasium besonders friedlich abging. Ich war noch in einer ziemlich kleinen Klasse, als der Vorfall durch die Medien ging, aber trotzdem war die Bestürzung, Traurigkeit und Angst sowohl der Lehrer als auch der Schüler auch für uns deutlich spürbar.
Dieses Buch greift die Thematik anhand einer fiktiven Sammlung von Erlebnisberichten der Betroffenen eines Amoklaufs an einer Schule in Middletown auf. So wirkt das Geschehen noch näher. Auch fand ich es vom Autor sehr gut gelöst, die lange Vorgeschichte einzubauen, sodass deutlich wird, dass eine solche Tat komplexe Ursachen und Vorboten hat. Ein aufwühlendes Plädoyer für mehr Menschlichkeit an Schulen, hoffentlich lesen nicht nur viele Jugendliche sondern auch Lehrer dieses Buch!

I was told a while ago that Strasser started this book before Columbine, and then his publisher decided to move the release date back a little because it would seem like he was trying to capitalize on the tragedy. Whether or not that's the case, this book reads like it's real, although I know it's fiction. The way the "interviews" switch from person to person, with a clear sense of community, and an airing of all the ways people feel about such a situation... wow. It definitely made me think a bit more about recent tragedies and how they've affected our lives.
I began this book on CD, but switched over to reading the physical novel after I'd gotten about 25% in. I missed out on all the bits of data at the bottoms of the pages, which really kind of add to everything that's happening in the story.
Many of my high school students are not old enough to remember Columbine, but they are deeply affected by this book. I'm glad it's available to them.

This is an important book about school shootings. I appreciated the way the author had real articles and info about shootings at the bottom of the pages. I think the subject was dealt with realistically and the book kept my interest without having to be morbid. Well done.
Pretty uniquely written, however the ending was pretty tame and nothing stood out. A nice quick and easy read but nothing ground breaking.
