The Return was my first Rachel Harrison, and while I really loved the complicated friendship dynamics in that one, the overall story was pretty underwhelming. THIS BOOK, though? This blew me out of the water.

Ginger Snaps is possibly one of my favorite movies of all time, and Rachel Harrison really took that story and built on it for a new werewolf story for adult women instead of teens. We've got heavy sexual assault allegory here with the werewolf attack and how our main character has to go on with her life afterward, and then also some really good trauma rep and the ways that society treats women.

As a survivor, all of this rang incredibly true for me, especially the complicated relationship with her mom? Ugh. I had to take a break in the middle; it just got too real at times. Love love love everything about this. Must buy myself a copy to annotate immediately.

3.5. Pretty good story - I liked the writing, humour, characters and the few horror parts. I was personally just hoping for more horror and was a little bored at times. The audiobook narrator Laurel Lefkow was great and I really liked her voice.

I absolutely loved this. Rachel Harrison’s style of writing is my perfect cup of tea and I love the way that she explores trauma through supernatural elements. The comparison of Rory becoming a werewolf and her sisters going through and unplanned pregnancy was really poignant for someone terrified of what pregnancy does to a body. Obviously that wasn’t all that it kind of represented in the story but it was the part that hit me the hardest.
My only criticism is not with the book itself but the summary given for it. I did not personally find the romance to be “comedic”. No idea where that descriptor came from. This book did have me laughing to myself but I would never necessarily describe this as “comedic”.
