DID NOT FINISH: 35%

The writing style didn’t work for me. Dialogue felt clunky and not how real people talk to each other in my opinion.

This book was such a pleasant surprise. I didn’t expect the other elements of it, since I just thought it would be a cliché flat out horror, and I actually ended up liking it more than I thought. I felt attached to the characters too, which is also another unexpected treat. A lovable story for sure

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book, or its writing style but the further along I read the more I realized how well the writing style loaned itself to the story. Had actually never read a werewolf book before. I do appreciate *warning potential spoilers ahead* how the author used werewolf transformations / body horror in unison with some of the horrors women’s bodies endure (puberty, pregnancy, assault etc.) the whole time I was reading this book it made me really want to watch Ginger Snaps because of the parallel themes.

a fast paced, straightforward, darkly comedic novel about a woman coming to terms with the fact that she is turning into a werewolf while navigating her personal life and confronting her childhood trauma as an adult. i thought i would fly through this one bc it was exactly the kind of read i was looking for after a string of fantasies and love stories--something dark but with just enough of a romance subplot to satisfy the tiny bit of craving i have left for it--but the more i read, the more invested i got mostly bc rory's character and her journey. i loved her rage and her unhealthily nonchalant but also slightly chaotic and destructive response to trauma (which i related to a tad much. just a bit), and the way she learned to cope and heal from all of that even while she was going through all this wolfish messiness. the decision to have rory's werewolf transition play into her reclaiming of her bodily autonomy and scarlett's struggle with physical changes during pregnancy was a stroke of genius that i deeply admired rachel harrison for. overall, i could've done without that graphic birth scene but i wiped it out of my mind almost right after so i guess i'll live. 4.25 stars. i didnt realize rachel wrote a lot of other thriller/supernatural stuff and now i'm definitely checking those out.
