Wow! What a powerful story of historical significance. Gratz makes war so personal and tragic. I am new to Gratz but I'm a huge fan now.
Tough to read. It felt wrong somehow to read about 9/11 but then I realized that I regularly read about WWII and all those atrocities. Definitely a simplified-for-kids take on the story but it was well done.

I decided I was in the mood to check out more of Gratz's works, and like the others I've read, I really enjoy the alternating perspectives that are provided. I think that this is a good way to help introduce young people to considering different life experiences around something that they may initially approach from just a single point of view. In this case, both narratives are devastating and tragic and so hauntingly interconnected.
A book every American should read. Once started, it was impossible to put down. An instant classic.
Once again, Gratz connects history together in ways we can see the utter humanness that is behind it all. The ultimate lesson that we are to be truly in this together, with people everywhere, is a beautiful message to our young people. Those of us who lived through 911, no matter where we were in the country, have an opportunity to get inside the building and feel the frustration and exhaustion and fear of those inside. I will never forget this book.

Finished my 4th book by Gratz in two days. Easily read a hundred pages in one sitting. This book follows more than one story at a time altering between chapters in typical Gratz fashion. It makes it really hard to put down and to find a good stopping point. I was drawn into the stories of Brandon trying to escape the Twin Towers alive and of Reshmina trying to escape her country of Afghanistan’s war and strife alive, too. I’ve gifted this book to my parents, and they both agree, it’s awesome. Favorite quote: “It’s not us against the world; it’s all of us, working together, for each other.” Be sure to read the author’s end notes, too.

Gratz never disappoints. Listed on Mock Newbery 2022. A contender for certain.
GROUND ZERO tackles some extremely heavy subject matter and does it well. This book will speak to those who remember the horrors of 9/11 and the generations who have come after, born into a world forever changed. Told in dual POV across two generations and two countries, GROUND ZERO is a recommended read for middle grade readers, teens, and adults of all ages.
