Atmospheric, haunting. With such beautiful writing I was able to vividly imagine Area X: the tower, the lighthouse, the base, and all the flora and fauna in it. I loved the mystery and the inexplicable, and can’t wait to explore more of this world in the next two books.

Wow. Quietly, hauntingly, beautiful and luminescent, this novel scratches at the window trying to get in begging to take up residence and by the end you have opened the door halfway, waiting for it to step foot inside. You turn to walk down the hall, and it is already beside you.

I’m very conflicted with this book.

On one hand, the story is well paced and well written (in parts). Area X is described well enough to keep me interested while also maintaining an air of mystery. The tower is suitably creepy, as are the incidents mentioned to have happened to the previous explorers.

But at the same time I don’t give a shit about anything that happens. I think it’s a problem with the Biologist. She’s so blah and wishy washy that I really don’t care about her, the same goes for the Surveyor. The Psychologist is the most interesting and yet she doesn’t share anything.

We have no answers at the end of the book, which left it feeling unfulfilling and disappointing. If we did get any answers they are hidden in bloated writing and hard to distinguish. The ending is pretty good, I liked the tragedy of it, the final line in particular is haunting. It’s just a shame that the rest didn’t live up to the hype. If the Biologist had any personality I think things may have been different.

I’m not interested in the sequels.

Great sense of scientific mystery and suspense. Really slow paced in the first half, but loved the concept.

👁️👁️ jeff was on something when he wrote this

I feel like the narrator is divisive for readers and I actually don't care. If you don't like her, kys. They are simply too weak for her. Now, the focus on her sexuality from the author? Strange choice. But the biologist is a god to me.
Also, the movie absolutely butchered this book. It kinda makes me mad but then again, there's no way they could've done it justice.
