I wanted to like this more than I did. I'm definitely in the minority of readers who thought Annihilation was 'just okay'.
Whilst I appreciate why it was done, I couldn't gel with the clinical writing style and the lack of information given about the characters. I also felt very confused at points, but in frustration rather than intrigue. Of course, no one wants every aspect of a story spelt out to them, but similarly there must be clues or hints as to what actually is going on.
I may try out the next book in the series, but I'm not in a rush.

Edit: after reading the second book, this one makes more sense.
I read this book after seeing the movie, and I was happy to find that it's quite different.
I really liked the descriptions of "area X" and the creatures there. It was also suspenseful and kept me interested enough to want to read the next book.
However, it has the same problem that a lot of sci fi books share, that the characters aren't developed at all. We don't even learn their names because the narrator deems them irrelevant. The narrator is not particularly likeable. She thinks of herself as smarter and better than everyone else, to an almost sociopathic degree.
Let's hope for some character growth in the next book.

This book is trippy and interesting. I really enjoyed it. I also just love the deeper themes of discovering oneself, fear, and the ebb and flow of relationships.
