In Morewood Family Rules, you’re thrown into the action of a dysfunctional con family as one of their own returns from a prison sentence. Each chapter begins with a Morewood Family “rule” and then explores the values through the text. I liked the exploration of roles we are assigned to play in a family. The main character and our primary narrator, Jillian, has been plotting her own revenge to trick her family into coming clean and finally leave their old ways behind. What she really needs is closure. The romance element with Beck, Jillian’s bodyguard, was a little unexpected but I think it added a nice layer to the story since it is fairly low in terms of mystery and drama. Overall this was a really fun read due to the quirky cast of characters. I pictured this as a movie the entire time I read it so I think the comparisons to Knives Out are accurate. This book appeals to a certain type of humor and it hit the mark for me.

I honestly loved this book! Was it the most well-written book I've read? Probably not. But that didn't bother me at all. I just got so invested in the story and the characters - especially the kooky family. The witty banter between Jillian and Beck was excellent! Beck in general was just fantastic - he was definitely a favorite character.

I was a little surprised to get a second point of view in the book that wasn't Beck. Instead it was one of Jillian's cousins, which seemed a little random. But I actually ended up liking her perspective! Maybe this book just hit me at the right time, but I had so much fun reading this book!

4.25 star read. I enjoyed reading this book so much. The writing is a perfect amount of witty and humorous. A con family being the main plot was refreshing to read, and overall fun concept. Jillian is a lovable main character who didn’t put up with any of her families antics. Her inner monologues were the best! Definitely similar to Knives Out in the sense of family member stabbing each other on the back.

Excellent premise, fun characters, but somewhat lacking in execution and plot pacing
