I loved this book and would have given a 5 star rating but I have mixed feelings about the ending. I hope the story continues!

This was not for me.
The pacing was a little hectic, and the only character I actually liked was the "enemy prisoner" they had.
And the whole religious fanatic thing was really off putting for me.
The world itself seemed interesting, and I wish more of the world building focused on that rather than hammering in the same message about the main character's upbringing, over and over.
Cool concept, wasn't a fan of the execution.

I did not like this book. I didn't really like any of the characters or the writing style. It's fine I guess. The use of neopronouns was interesting, and I appreciate what the author was going for, but I think it was inelegantly managed and it didn't click.

There are some interesting, well written elements in here. Balancing "how to communicate space-bending scifi " without sounding pretentious has to be difficult. But for me, in fell flat in a few ways:
- The interludes overexplained things without adding much to the narrator's character
- In general, Misery starts out sounding too childish and jumps into their new position with very little doubt. It wasn't awful, but given how important that arc is to the themes, I wanted a bit more realism
- Death, and the cost of death, needed more time to breathe
- All of the characters failed to connect emotionally for me. I kept trying to figure out why I didn't care, and honestly I'm still thinking on it.
The lore, the premise, parts of the writing were quite good. This just read like a young author.

This books writing style was a little dense and didn’t allow the reader to get invested with its characters. Felt it was pretty predictable with all its foreshadowing. I think it did well tying up loose ends all of its plot points.
Cool gendered and pronoun system & loved the narrative structure (see the introduction - storytelling as the core of the book).
Overall, a bit hard to get into the plot : convoluted sci-fi religious system with a messiah/Joan of Arc figure who thinks they're fooling everyone, and hallucinates a hot construct they nickname 'Ruin'.
