A cut above the typical Christmas cozy. Most cozy mysteries are just sort of treacly to me - They're enjoyable, but formulaic and usually not memorable at all. This one has a typical setup, with a woman going home to visit her parents' Christmas tree farm in the Christmas-themed tourist town of Mistletoe. Someone unpopular gets murdered. Add in the usual ingredients of a stoic romantic partner in the local sheriff, lots of banter, yada yada. Except... It's better than the usual. The heroine feels more real. The mystery is more engaging. The holiday trappings make this THE seasonal book to read if you're in the mood for loads of beautifully-described holiday gatherings, decorations, foods, drinks, and festivals. So much Christmas stuff happens in the book that it's a bit like vacationing through a pile of Hallmark cards.
Also, the killer is great. There are spots where it diverges suddenly into near-horror territory, with creepy messages and stalking and a general feeling of constant danger. Most cozy mysteries emphasize the "cozy" and I get bored, but this one emphasized the "Trying to expose a murderer is not a safe adventure" and kept me hooked.

This book was super cheesy, but I enjoyed it! It’s as close as you can get to a Hallmark Christmas Murder mystery!
