This was a difficult read for me, in that the cruelty of the life Ada has led hit me really hard. It was notable in a book about World War II that the cruelty of a mother toward her children could outpace the cruelty of war. But I couldn't put it down. This is beautifully written and incredibly thoughtful, with an ending that is full of the hope that Ada has been denying herself throughout the book.
