I loved this series to start out with, couldn't wait for this book, what a let down the book was. I am ready for Alex to grow as a character! Alex is still the same indecisive flaky character she was the first book! I also loved the death failin back and forth.... But it's getting old! PICK A MAN AND STICK WITH HIM!!
I did enjoy this but don't really feel that the author did anything different with either the story format or the characters in this installment
I love this series. I know the author had some problems with getting this book out to us fans. But I think she did the right thing. Family comes first! I am so glad she came back to us! I love this series and I think this series would be a great movie. I can't wait for more from this author and this series. Kalayna Price please write us more! This book was a great next book in the series and I love Alex and all her friends.
I listened to this book and was pleasantly surprised with how involved I became in the story. The story and the setting were vivid and exciting and even though it had been years since I read the last book in the series I was able to get back into it right away.
This was the first time the villain was really obvious to me, but I otherwise enjoyed it. I got strong October Daye vibes from the Winter Court in this one too, which was fun.
A nice addition to the series. A very long wait for many. And a nice layout for the next books. Price leaves you feeling as if you are on the verge of finally having some of Alex's big questions answered!
Meh... 2.75, not quite a good book. It could have been great, it had a great story going with the Glitter and her illness. What made it loose its greatness is... Alex is an idiot pretty quickly.
I've now read 3 books and this is the 4th and she would never made the mistake with the Queen that she made in the deal. I immediately said no... that's not what she does, but she, who is a grave witch doesn't? So that right there started me down the road of dislike. The next thing, the Queen... she wants Alex's help yet, she offers no help in return for the illness while in service. But even with those two points that made the story just maddening for me, it could have been a good story, a really good story. But then came the last quarter of the book.
So they go look in a bog for these hob goblins. From any horror movie, what do you not do? hmm. Well I won't say it out loud but she does it. The consequences to her relationship with Death just are confusing and ticked me off as it was going pretty good up to here. So now the relationship focuses back on Falin. Well I wrote him off two books ago and am not willing to even going back that direction so... going in that direction and making the triangle stronger again... eye roll worthy move. Falin is still bound to the Queen so less chance there than Death and his risk. Still I think there needs to be a new person as I'm tired of them both. I love Death but "my very best friend" is not much of a "friend" seeing as she doesn't know anything about his past including his name. OK so they start from the beginning and don't go there, fine, then... who is he now? She knows more than most but still not a lot and his disappearing act is just too prevalent for comfort.
So I got who the bad guy was pretty quickly.I was wondering if he was going to attack but thought maybe he wanted her as his pet plane weaver, maybe. The holes that show up from that point on, and the plot manipulation just to put it in line for the ending.
So the very end... the Queen is given the answer and she again forces Alex back to Winter, really? If she can always do that then pretty much Alex is hers so... what is the point? It is said over and over that fae can change allegiance yet that is never is explained how? Why doesn't Falin? Or the other members of the court. So back in Fairy and once again, This just killed it for me altogether.
I did also wonder why she still does not use her resources more. Like the fae police officer. He was the one that brought her in on it, he is fae and might be able to answer questions, yet just because he doesn't like her, most likely because she is royalty, she doesn't ask, what he can ask her but not vise/versa?
So in conclusion, if there is more than one book to go in the series and doesn't wrap up in the next, I think this is the last of the Grave Witch, Alex Craft for me.

Spoiler
She agrees that if she finds who was responsible, she would get a year and a day. What? I was like no... if she does her job and raises the shade to question, period. She is not an investigator.Spoiler
If she is hoping that Alex is successful which she should be wanting, then she should give her a connection to fairy for the duration of the investigation. So they go look in a bog for these hob goblins. From any horror movie, what do you not do? hmm. Well I won't say it out loud but she does it.
Spoiler
Split up. And of course in that moment she follows her nose to a tree, which later is stolen so just a set up for the next book. And then she is captured and almost killed. This makes Death have a conniption and never reappear. So I got who the bad guy was pretty quickly.
Spoiler
I didn't understand why he didn't have her killed when he came to her house, I get that he doesn't want blood on his hands but if the hobs do it? I didn't think about the blood on his hands at the time, butSpoiler
Well latter he tries to outright kill her so that scene no longer makes sense to me. He tried to have her killed at the wedding but he doesn't at her house, hmm.So the very end...
Spoiler
She is forced to attend the Queen, then the Queen kills the hobgoblin. Alex has a problem with this and I'm like... why? He is horrid and tried to kill her. There is a lot of evidence against him for killing children, etc... She didn't kill him. So off they go to raise his shade, and she doesn't negociate again. Yes, the Queen is crazed, OK maybe I'll understand.Spoiler
doesn't fill her end of the bargain. Just because she doesn't like the answer, doesn't matter. Isn't it a fae thing that once complete, it has to be fulfilled? Doesn't matter if she doesn't like the answer. ThenSpoiler
Alex is left on her own. Wow, again? Twice in one book. Bad guy right around the corner and she is left alone.I did also wonder why she still does not use her resources more. Like the fae police officer. He was the one that brought her in on it, he is fae and might be able to answer questions, yet just because he doesn't like her, most likely because she is royalty, she doesn't ask, what he can ask her but not vise/versa?

My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.
It has been a long while since I have visited the world of Alex Craft and her friends. I was quite surprised with how quickly I was able to pick the story back up. I had originally planned to relisten to the third book in the series before listening to this one, but I didn’t have a copy. I thought I had bought a copy, but I must have gotten it from the library. Anyway, I did okay without the relisten to the previous book.
It has only been a few weeks for Alex since the end of the last book (seems like so much longer, since it was for me.) Alex is quickly drawn into a new case. Humans are taking a new drug that are bringing nightmares to life and killing them. Then when she goes to raise the shades, there isn’t much left of them, which is really weird.
Alex is also called to the Winter court by the Winter Queen, which is never good. Falin is forced to bring her. She is put into a position to help the queen, but Alex uses her smarts to quickly solve another issue that she’s having. She needs her independent status or join a court. If she joins a court, she could be forced to move when the courts shift (fae courts move separately from the mortal world). She quickly makes a deal with the Queen to get her independent status for at least a while if she can help the Queen, which is easier said than done.
There is some drama in the romance part of this book. There were issues with Alex’s current lover, Death, in the previous book. Falin is trying really hard to court her. Oh, and she finds out that there is a new player that she didn’t even know about. Personally, I’m still on team Falin. I think he is the best bet for her. However, as a member of the Winter Court, what will happen if the courts shift and he has to move and she doesn’t.
I will say I was very glad to be back in Necros. It was everything I remember that I loved about this series. Alex is a great character who is caring and is always trying to help her friends. She also has great friends. Even some of the cops who she works with who are not her friends are great characters. This is a fun urban fantasy series with great mysteries and crime drama. You do need to start with the first book in the series and work your way through the series without being lost.
Narration
This is the only series that I’ve listened to with Emily Durante. That is not because I don’t like her, I just haven’t come across her for anything else. I think she does a great job with her narration of this series. I was a little worried that with the long break between books that there might be a different narrator for this book. I was so glad to see she was still narrating this series. She is Alex Craft to me. She does a great job with the different voices, both male and female. I like her pace and tones. I think she does a great job showing the sense of urgency when the scene calls for it. She is a narrator that I would recommend.
