I definitely appreciated the continuation of Simon’s story because it felt unfinished but it really didn’t feel like a Shadowhunter book to me. Maybe because it was a narratively driven bind up of short stories written by different authors? It felt a little disconnected I think and one story in particular felt like everyone was acting like a pack of animals over a baby which I really had trouble getting through because it felt so out of character. But it was so nice to see more about the Clave and it’s systemic issues that are deeply rooted in racism. It reflects the world today in a way that’s kinda sad but also hopeful. There are people like Simon who will shoulder the burden of bringing change. I liked seeing old and new characters in a new light and it makes me excited to keep reading with Lady Midnight.
I will say I wish we got to see Clary and Simon become parabatai but maybe that’s in another book...?
I was so happy they included the Seelie and Mark Blackthorn in the Wild Hunt. It gives you a little hint to the future of the unrest that is caused in the Seelie courts with the queen being gone and everything and how Shadowhunters treat their own people just because they’re half faerie. That’s just messed up leaving Mark to the Wild Hunt...
Simon being split in two was really frustrating because like Clary and Isabelle we all know Simon to be this badass geeky vampire but in this book it’s hard to get a grip on who he is now. I guess that was the point and we need to love Simon for who he is which is who he kinda was all along but now a little different since he lost his memory? Idk it was hard to wrap my mind around it and made me feel connected but also disconnected from him. Also, why the hell was Isabelle such a jerk to him when he wanted take a step back from a relationship he didn’t even know he had with her until he got his memory back?? Like I get it you want your Simon back but like...he doesn’t remember you??? Idk.
Overall I really like this book it was a nice wrap up to some loose ends, some glimpses into the past, and hints at the future.

I read all of these short stories forever ago and I finally just realized I had never added them to my read shelves! Whoops :)
That aside I adored this collection of short stories and I cannot wait to get my hands on the actual physical copy. I am Cassie Clare trash and I am 100% okay with that.

I had no idea that this book consisted of short stories ALL following Simon and I freaking loved it. It was so funny. I loved how it gave us a glimpse into these little random tales from the past (especially regarding some characters that we know and love) but still followed Simon in his journey after the events of City of Heavenly Fire! I loved each and every story, especially the ones that involved Magnus and Alec and I think this was such a lovely way to wrap up the Mortal Instruments series and bring some closure. And in true Cassandra Clare fashion, you bet she absolutely ripped my heart out in the end!
So I knew it had to happen. It was so perfectly set up ‘drink from the mortal cup, you’ll ascend—but sometimes you could also die’ so I knew at least ONE of them had to not make it—but still when it was George of all people I was still surprised.
Also Simon Lovelace still feels a little weird since I’ve read 11 shadowhunter books and known him as Simon Lewis—so that’s for sure going to take some getting used too
Now I just want to read the lost book of the white because I know Simon will be on that mission//after reading the blurb// especially about him being parabatai now with Clary which wasn’t a surprise at all

“We all change the world, with every day of living in it," Magnus said. "You just have to decide how you want to change the world.”
Dos palabras: SIMON LEWIS o bueno simon lovelace. What a man.
“Of all his new friends, though, he liked Matthew the best. Matthew always wanted to talk about the books James had read, or tell James a story as good as a book. He made obvious efforts to find James when James was not there, and obvious efforts to protect James when he was there. James did not have many nice things to write letters home about: he ended up writing letters that were full of Matthew.”

Here's the official reading order for the interconnected series in the Shadowhunter world - strongly recommend reading in the Chronological order
https://shadowhunters.com/tl/mobile/mobile.php
(there were a couple of the chapters from this book that could be argued when to read because they're largely flashback type scenes - so the list puts it in the time frame of the flashback, but that introduces characters who are experiencing the flashbacks that you haven't met yet/the flashbacks were relevant to that character's story)

Great reread in prep for Chain of Gold. Look up my individual reviews to see my thoughts on each.
