Okay I have A LOT to say about this book. If you have not read this yet, I would highly suggest you to NOT READ WHAT I WILL BE SAYING NEXT BECAUSE WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD.
Okay so first I'll rate each story.
Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy: 4.5
The Lost Herondale: 4.5
The Whitechapel Fiend: 5
Nothing but Shadows: 5 (*DYING*)
The Evil We Love: 4.5 (Page 333 OW )
Pale Kings and Princes: 5
Bitter of Tongue: 5
The Fiery Trial: 5
Born to Endless Night: 5 (OMIGOSH ;v;)
Angels Twice Descending: 5 (I'm still crying)
I'm just gonna talk about the parts that struck me the most, whether it was emotionally or otherwise.
So, from the first story.
George Lovelace. His friendship with Simon made me cry. The fact that Simon called George his BROTHER hurt me so much, especially because of what happened like 15 pages later (I'm still crying as I write this WHY Cassie why). There's so much I want to say about George but I honestly can't right now. I'm so broken about the ending of this. I'm just going to say, George Lovelace was the purest, kindest, gentlest person in the entire book in my opinion. He did not deserve to die that way. He didn't deserve to die so early. (Aaaand I'm crying again). This is my cue to stop, for my tears are trailing down my face again. All I will say is that I loved him with all my heart. He will always be one of my favorite characters of all time.
I'm going to move on to more happier topics. Like HOW I CALLED JON AND MARISOL FROM THE BEGINNING. I ~knew~ they would become a thing as soon as they started to fight. I shipped it from the beginning and I literally freaked out when they were revealed to be a thing. *I ship it so much*.
OKAY NO BUT the story with James. Oh my GOSH I cried. I could not take how they were bullying him. My heart was so broken. Then, of course, James and Mathew became friends and PARABATAI AND MY HEART. I cannot wait for The Lost Hours now!
SIZZY. I have been waiting for them to say "I love you" to the other for TOO LONG. I was so happy that they finally had their happy ending.
I'm glad that Clary and Simon are going to be parabatai. That's wonderful and sweet and UGH I just love it so much.
Okay can we talk about Jace being a total DOUCHEBAG and telling Simon that Alec was mad at him about something? I was racking my brain trying to figure out what the problem was! Jace, you total jerk.
MALEC!!!! I knew from Lady Midnight that they adopt a baby and name him Max but the backstory was so beautiful. I cried from the beauty of it. I will literally die with that ship.
I'm going to skip to the end, after George dies, when Simon goes to visit his grave. The fact the Jessamine was with George made me cry even more. I'm glad that he won't be completely alone. I thought it was sweet that Simon decided to call himself Simon Lovelace--I love it a lot I really do--but I still find it weird because I'm so used to Simon Lewis.
Overall, this book was absolutely incredible. Cassandra Clare yet again manages to make me ride the most ridiculously intense emotional roller coaster of all time. If you enjoyed TMI or TID or TBC, you will absolutely love this book.

See my “activity” for thoughts on the separate novellas. But overall, a very good collection of short stories!
I'm conflicted. This installation of the Shadowhunter Chronicles was almost perfect. There were some slower stories in the middle, but the ending was building up and up and up... and then it just fell flat. Here are my thoughts on the stories as I read them, one by one.
1. Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy ✿✿✿✿
I did not love how the story began, and I think the fault lies with how A City of Heavenly Fire ended. At the end of that book, Simon is “returned” to them and all seems well. Therefore, when I started reading story 1, I was not expecting how … well… broken Simon was. I can’t help but feel some resentment towards C. Clare for re-making Simon. It almost feels like a cheap way to milk the series - make it go on a little longer. I can appreciate the attempt to give Simon another chance to be a hero, but as the stories progress, C. Clare keeps steering Simon back to his "old self," which further accentuates the pointlessness of this story as anything other than fan-service.
George is a cutie though. Such a pure one.
2. The Lost Herondale ✿✿✿
After very little training, the students are tasked with dispatching a vampire. Simon is still considered "special" by the Shadowhunter students, but he's not having any of that hierarchy nonsense and demotes himself into the mundane track. This eventually becomes the catalyst for change within the Academy, which turns out to be a very nice overarching theme.
Izzy saves him during the vampire mission and he breaks up with her again... because he doesn't want to be subjected to her expectations? Seeing them together makes me frustrated and sad.
Clary makes an appearance and tells Simon to be nicer to Izzy? But why? Simon is going through a lot as well.
3.The Whitechapel Fiend ✿✿✿✿
Jace and Tessa make an appearance.
Jace is comically suave in all his scenes, and him without Clary is pretty tolerable. I love the banter between him and Simon.
Tessa's story about Jack the Ripper was amazing. I adore the ID crew, and though it was super short, I still loved the story.
Jace speaks with Tessa about his heritage - I wish I had been able to read about that.
Simon sends a letter to Izzy and he seems wishy washy about either becoming a new person, or going back to old self.
4.Nothing but Shadows ✿✿✿✿✿
At first, I had my doubts about this chapter as soon as baseball was announced - it reminded me too much of filler episodes in anime. But then all of a sudden, a story about James Herondale!
I absolutely loved reading about James. His characterization was fantastic and I could really feel his awkwardness and introversion. The rivalry and later friendship between him and Matthew Fairchild is endearing and his powers are fascinating. I can't wait to read his series! (But seriously, why are all the side series better than TMI?)
The ending was a bit odd, seeing as though Simon suddenly changes his tune to “I should value my friends” just after listening to Catarina's story and starts to accept his old life. It was jarring to read, especially since he spends the first few stories establishing that he's a “new” Simon.
5. The Evil We Love ✿✿✿
I did not want to read about Robert Lightwood. That being said, the parts that didn't include his history with Valentine were entertaining. I understand the parallel that C.Clare was trying to create, by comparing Isabelle to Valentine - “power of charisma” and all - but the connection was shaky at best.
Rob's story is one that contained some new tidbits (his fear of marks), and some old (Michael Wayland loved him), but unfortunately, he wasn't a character that I cared much about.
Simon's struggle with Izzy's antics were much more enjoyable, which successfully distracted me from the fact that Izzy was bamboozling the students the entire time.
6. Pale Kings and Princes ✿✿✿✿
There were two stories here: of Fae and of Simon & Izzy. While I'm glad that Simon and Izzy have finally figured something out in their relationship, I actually found that Fae story, featuring the Blackthorns and Lady Nerissa to be more interesting.
The fact that Lady Nerissa wasn't actually evil, that she'd woven a lie for Andrew was fascinating.
Simon and Izzy's attempts to go on a proper date were amusing as well, but were ultimately overshadowed by the Blackthorn arc.
7. Bitter of Tongue ✿✿✿✿✿
Hooray! A new story, and not a flashback.
Mark Blackthorn makes an appearance, and ultra hypes up Dark Artifices. I felt quite nervous reading it, because there's a definite sense of hopelessness surrounding Mark. I really feel for him, and hope he has a happy ending.
Lord Montgomery returns, to my endless amusement. Then the go to Helen and Aline's wedding, which was sweet. However, this is also where the story makes a sharp turn away away from the Academy. You'll notice that the following stories try pretty hard to pull Simon back in to his old friends.
8. The Fiery Trial ✿✿
Being drugged and hallucinating is definitely not a trope that I enjoy. I feel like my time was wasted by this. Well, at least Simon and Clary know that they are parabatai.
Julian and Emma become parabatai, and C. Clare shovels foreshadowing down our throats about the romance of Dark Artifices.
Overall, boring.
9. Born to Endless Night ✿✿✿✿✿
This was the best thing I've ever read.
Warlock baby was kind of random, but it all played out nicely.
Daddy Magnus's disbelief that they were keeping the baby was hilarious. I think it's wonderful that Alec's parents, however unbelievably, are accepting of Malec.
Alec’s friendship with Maia and Lily was perfect. I wish I remember more about him though. He always seemed to be the broody character in TMI, and almost overnight, he is comfortable in his own skin.
Alec and Simon have a deep moment where Alec tells him that he owes Simon everything. Then Simon tells Alec that Jace trolled him into thinking that there was some negativity between them. It was great.
Bittersweet as well at the end, where Magnus says that he and Max will be the only ones left ;-;
10. Angels Twice Descending ✿✿
It was a quick story in which it sets up how "different" this new generation is Shadowhunters is, and how Simon picks the name Lovelace.
To be honest, I hate it. I hated George's death too much. It was very unnecessary , and creating angst for no reason. Simon had already lost Jordan as "old Simon," and now he loses George. Why has C. Clare done this?

I enjoyed this book more than the main series(probably because there was no Jace/Clary lovey-divey scenes, and Simon was the main character). One learns a little more about Shadowhunter world and side characters' lives, which was fascinating. The newly introduced characters were surprisingly lovable, even though we don't spend much time with them. I'd say every character in this book had a considerable character development, even the ones who appeared briefly.
I especially enjoyed Nothing but Shadows, Bitter of Tongue and Born to Endless Night (all co-written by Sarah Rees Brennan)
What annoyed the hell out of me, though, is that in half of the stories they repeated over and over again who is who to whom. I'm not a golden fish, I think I can remember a main character from the main series and a character from the last chapter, thank you very much.
