ik enjoyde het niet heel erg in het begin want ik moest wel soort van wennen aan het format en de personages (en ik was nog boos over het feit dat simon zn herinneringen allemaal kwijt was) maar naarmate ik verder las begon ik het steeds meer te waarderen

Really compelling for a compilation work. Particularly regarding the bonds of parabatai. Using that as a through line as Simon’s experience training worked well. James and Matthew and Robert and Michael in particular were vignettes that were very impactful. Very  much looking forward to reading more about James and Matthew. Knowing that is likely all readers will see of Robert and Michael was bittersweet— it’s clear they both loved each other and it leaves the reader wondering if things had been different and Michael had lived, would there have been a way paved for them to be together. Magnus and Alec adopting a baby was unexpected but really sweet and again showed how much the shadowhunters have grown over the course of TMI. George you will always be famous to me.

I’m going to be doing a little review of the book, story by story.

This takes place after City of Heavenly Fire and we find Simon, who has lost his memory, getting to know Clary and friends all over again while trying to get his memories back with the help of Magnus and by attending the Academy to become a Shadowhunter. I have liked this book more than the Bane chronicles one, as I have found the stories in this one a little bit more interesting.

- Welcome to the Shadowhunter Academy: 3/5.
Here we see how Simon starts regaining some memories as well as he starts to live his life in the Academy. We get to know George Lovelace, that cutie is a very lovely boy, adopted by the Lovelaces. Over all, I liked how it introduces us to Simon’s journey to become a shadowhunter.

- The Lost Herondale: 3/5.
Everything that has a Herondale in it, I’m going to like it. Catarina Loss tells Simon the story of a lost Herondale and how she takes a baby with her so she can save him by hiding it because the clave i goin to punish his mother for something his father did.

- The Whitechapel Fiend: 3/5.
Jace goes to the academy to teach the new students how to jump off a tree without getting hurt and then Tessa goes to tell them a story about her family and the case of Jack the Ripper and how it is thought to be a case of a murder er but it was all because a little demon girl. Then Jace speaks to Tessa, as she is one of the last Herondale alive (apart from the lost Herondale). Over all this story is very sweet, and heartfelt.

- Nothing But Shadows: 3.5/5.
The story of James Herondale and his stay at the Shadowhunter Academy. This story is really sweet, you get to know more about the Herondale family and how he gets to know his parabatai Matthew and his powers.

- The Evil We Love: 2/5.
This revolves around Robert Lightwood, and how he tells us more about the Circle story and ho easy it is to being manipulated to do something that’s wrong, as we can see with Izzy and how she convinces other students to summon a demon. This in reality was a test to prove what Robert wanted to teach them but Simon did not fall for this as we can see within the story. As Robert is telling the story of the Circle, we get a flashback and see how Robert treated his parabatai Michael Wayland and how he treated Michael when he confessed he was in love with Robert - let me tell you that this is not new as we only have to see how he treated his very own son. Even though I find this story interesting, I found the narrative to be a bit slow and I did not like that at all.

- Pale Kings and Princes: 3/5.
This one revolves around Helen Blackthorn. She is back because she is told that if she goes to teach at the academy and tell the students that faeries are not trustable, she will be allowed to marry in Idris her girlfriend Aline. This also tells the date that Izzy and Simon have and when Izzy follow Jace’s advice to take Simon to a weapons shop but this does nto go very smooth (but we now that Simon compensates it to Izzy by taking her to lake Lynn and it is the most beautiful date you will see).

- Bitter of Tongue: 3.5/5.
Marisol “tortures” Jon by explaining him things that happen in the mundane world. But also shows us how Simon and his group of friends are on a mission and we see how Simon is thrust into the faerie world and is captured. Then Mark Blackthorn appears and saves him. It is also heartbreaking to see how he has never forget who he is and his brothers and sisters names, but also how he discovers that The Clave is no longer fighting to get him back - but Simon tells him to not loose his hope. In the end Izzy goes to save Simon but both of them end up trapped in a cage but Mark save them anyways. When Simon is at Helen’s wedding he manages to tell her that Mark wishes her to have a beautiful wedding and that is so beautiful that it makes you love Simon more if that’s possible.

- The Fiery Trial: 3.5/5.
Emma and Julian are about becoming parabatai and ask for Clary and Simon to be their seconds in the ceremony. And then we get to this really weird scene where Simon and Clary get drugged with Lake Lynn’s water by Jem, Magnus and Catarina to test if they can become parabatai. It is a really weird scene but at the same time is really interesting to see how them both are meant to be parabatai. Everything in this story is beautiful and great.

- Born To Endless Night: 4.5/5.
This was one of my favourite stories. Here we see how Magnus and Alec get their baby warlock, and how they name him Max. It is just adorable to see how Alec’s family being just cute with the baby. Here Robert is adorable, he is obsessed with the baby -because is Alec’s son essentially- and the moment when Simon teaches him to use a smart watch to be able to know when is his turn to hold the baby. Here Simon tells Izzy he loves her. This story is just cute and wholesome.

- Angels Twice Descending: 5/5.
In this story everything is great and joy and finally Izzy and Simon have sex bu towards the end this story is one of the saddest things I have ever read it even made me cry. We see how the Ascension ceremony is and how Simon becomes a shadowhunter and he gets his memories back and everything is joy, but then everything turns sad, we see how George is not able to ascend and ends up dying because his body is not able to support Raziel’s blood. We see how Simon tries to go to him and save him but it is too late for him. In the end we see how Simon, Izzy and Clary go to the London Institute to visit George’s gravestone, and Simon sees Jessamine and George’s ghosts and, in that moment he decides that his Shadowhunter name is going to be Lovelace, and it is very heartwarming.
