I really enjoyed this book! Some sections were really long and drawn out, but it all mostly felt cohesive and added richness to the world. Simons relationships with everyone were beautiful. Loved the emphasis on found family and bring together the ‘Elites’ and the ‘Dregs.’
I loved the majority of the stories and getting to spend time with these characters again.

this was going to be a 4.5 but i'm giving it an extra quarter star for how much i loved born to endless night
the overarching story was quite nice, i enjoyed the pacing of it, george lovelace was a particular highlight, though his death felt like a bit of an unnecessary gutpunch , and the dreary, moldy, broken down academy made for a fun setting
simon's dynamics with preexisting characters was a bit of a mixed bag, him and jace are always fun and i enjoyed catarina's aloof mentor vibe, but all the angsting about izzy was frankly kind of annoying, and the clary bits were alright but a bit dull
also i realize they were originally published separately, but it's still kind of awkward when there's recaps of stuff from previous stories in the same book
anyway individual story thoughts:
welcome to shadowhunter academy: a fun intro, establishes my favourite and least favourite dynamics in the book
the lost herondale: i appreciate that simon doesn't blindly trust authority, and i'm desperately curious about the titular lost herondale
the whitechapel fiend: the modern day section is delightful, the 1888 part is a bit weak, though i loved jessamine's involvement
nothing but shadows: i love james herondale so much he is a baby and must be protected, definitely my second favourite story of the book. not much going on in the present-day section, it really feels like just a framing device, but it's fine
the evil we love: so robert lightwood is a closet case, wow, but i am unfortunately now fascinated with him as a character (unfortunately because he doesn't tend to get much of a spotlight in canon or fanworks), this did a great job fleshing out valentine's generation and how the circle happened. present-day section wasnt as interesting but i like how robert manages to be a kinda shitty parent when trying to mend fences, and his practical lesson was fun
pale kings and princes: this one's a very unsubtle neon sign for what the next conflict will be, but seeing helen is nice. the real story of her mother fell a little flat cause what she did was horrible regardless of whether the love was real
bitter of tongue: mark! mark was excellent and i loved simon's conflict about what information to share with whom
the fiery trial: ngl i was kinda disappointed that neither simon nor clary ever worked up the courage to ask the other to be parabatai and they instead got there by being forced into hallucinogenic ritual, like it was a fun dream sequence but i wanted them to choose it
born to endless night: this is just pure fluff and i am here for it, baby max is too cute and i love that the entire lightwood clan is on board with the adoption before magnus even realizes it's happening
angels twice descending: i'm so! sad!! i did not deserve this happening to my fave

Phew this book is an emotional rollercoaster. All the short stories are fantastic. My favourites were The Whitechapel Fiend, Nothing But Shadows and Pale Kings and Princes (the ending of that one f**cked me up).
I really love every single one of the stories! Especially "Born to Endless Night"!
I honestly don't know what to say about the book aside from how good it is. There was some throwbacks that got me a little bored but other than that I truly enjoyed every story in the book. It's so nice to be able to get a glimpse into Simon's time at the Shadowhunter Academy leading to the days of his Ascension!
I just love it. That's it. That's the review.
