My reading of the complete works of Shakespeare chronologically continues with this comedy which for me is a personal favorite. This is simply because I studied it at school and so really got into it and went to an excellent promenade performance. The plot is fluff as the filthy joke of a title suggests but there are moments and characters that still burn through. Beatrice in particular is a spitfire of a character. A genuinely mature realization of the earlier shrew characters. The fey heroes are purposefully weak compared to the older comedians and one wonder if this is Shakespeare saying goodbye to his more youthful comedies and tragedies like Romeo and Juliet. Dogberry and pals are also a more successful and warmer version of foolery.

This was my first actual Shakespeare play (the comic version of midsummer's night dream doesn't count). I enjoyed it very much. The characters were wonderful, and the writing was also done in such an amazing way. Despite being an old work, it kept me interested and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I feel about this, similar to how I feel about The Hobbit. The plot, characters and writing style are all amazing, but it can drone on at times.
