Super enjoyed this. Realized that I could actually picture the landscapes and settings more than I could the characters and their faces -- not a complaint, but a reflection on how well the scenes were set. So fast paced yet involving. Once I got past a third of the way in, I had a difficult time putting it down or doing anything else until I finished it. What a long weekend is made for!

If you love an enchanting, yet sinister fantasy atmosphere, this book is for you. Especially if you want a story based in folklore and aren't adverse to a bit (a lot) of on page violent murder. Really adored the way the main character tirelessly fights tooth and nail not only for herself, but for what's right, even when those in power around her are concerned with something else entirely.
Graphic: Violence, Sexual harassment, Sexual assault, Injury/Injury detail, Blood, and Murder
Moderate: Fire/Fire injury

3.5 Stars. I really liked that this book took our expectations of characters and twisted them. All the characters ended up not quite how you expected them and it made for an interesting read. I thought that the monsters and villains were unlike what I had read before, since Novak drew on Eastern European folk lore (which I don’t know a lot about). I appreciated that there were different types of magic, but it felt too convenient at times that Agnieszka could simply do magic. The main characters relationship felt like it came out of nowhere, and had problematic beginnings. Overall, I think the world was well developed and I felt that I connected with most of the characters.

Really beautiful. Book had a feeling like you’re reading an old story. A lot of drama and good characters. I like the passive aggressive male mc he’s funny. Wish I got more of dragon and agnieszka but that’s the romance in me. A very good fantasy book
