It occurred to me about 2/3 of the way through this that it is the precursor to Jurassic Park. Crazy scientist on a remote island creates a new form of life that he eventually loses control of and it starts killing everyone. Nature 1, science 0.

Revisiting some science fiction and fantasy classics for the Cousera course, I've reread The Island of Dr. Moreau.
I enjoyed the read and think it's one of the must-reads for anyone into science fiction as it gives some of the foundations to developing the idea of "what happens if..." that is the source of the science fiction speculation.
Characters are not as deeply developed as in other stories, but Wells is rather an "idea writer" than a "character one".

I read The Island of Doctor Moreau back to back with The time Machine; both of which are by H. G. Wells. I liked Island better. I couldn't help but think of how improbable the creatures in the story were, but that was 100+ years ago. Modern thoughts aside, it was horiffic what the animals had to endure.
It was fitting that the animals reverted to their former natures - that spoke volumes to me about how man can mess try to mess with nature, but it really is futile.
The ending was so appropriate- Pendrick having PTSD. Very fitting given what he went through.
