The writing in this book is gorgeous, sublime, and healing despite sometimes harsh topics.  The sophistication of the interactions between the characters is incredibly realistic. Forna gives dignity to survivors of trauma, humanizing their experiences without it turning into trauma porn or becoming bogged down in heaviness. Her deft portrayal of a later in life romance is notable in that it doesn't the focus on the insecurities which plague and overwhelm so many fictional relationships. She assumes the reader is smart and doesn't overly explain things.  This is a brilliant book that will stay with me for a long time.
