Great that this audio version was read by Derek Jacobi who played Brother Cadfael on the PBS series but it is Abridged to a three hour length and I just feel like I've missed something. Good story about the touchy subject of heresy.

The usual Cadfael formula with a nicely done plot made this a fun read.

I enjoy slipping into Brother Cadfael's world from time to time. It features the slow paced life of the gardens and the monastery interrupted by human tragedy. The plots tend to be very similar with the young romantic lead wrongfully accused of murder. This one adds charges of heresy as well, and it makes for a stressful, unpleasant read. Sadly none of the characters appeal to Scripture itself , and it turns into a debate with quotes from the church fathers. As usual, the Augustinian is made out to be the worst of the lot.
A good point is made that often as we age, our viewpoints change and mature. Also that it is the fruit of a person's life that speaks the loudest. Still I found it difficult to get past the opening chapters. Once I did, I enjoyed the mystery itself which is why I gave it three stars.

An excellent Cadfael adventure. It's a shame that this one was never adapted for the screen. As with most mysteries, the killer is not who you think it is at first blush. You'll have to read it for yourself to find out who!
