Especially resonates for geek families, I think. Both my 9yo and I liked this even better than her other book, Roller Girl. You can definitely tell early on the general direction things are going to take, but you still want to know how they're going to get there. Good cast of characters. Very approachable for pretty young readers - would probably work as a read aloud for 1st or 2nd grade.
Also, it definitely made me cry.
The end is almost too upbeat and tidy, but that's my only complaint.

This was so good! I loved the contrast of the place so foreign to so many of us being home to her, and the familiar school being so foreign to her...highlighting the fact that middle school makes everyone feel out of place. I felt her loneliness as a parent, though, and am trying to figure out how to take that in. And can we talk about how Anita rejected her at school first?

This was a creative take on middle school woes. To be so different and unique in middle school can be hard, but Impy carries on being who she is despite all that. I love Jamieson's work and this is no exception.

For all of us who struggled through those awkward years!

I don't think I can truly sum up how much I loved this? The atmosphere of the Renaissance Faire is absolutely perfect and I feel like there needs to be more fiction that captures this essence because it is so wonderful. The storyline follows a very typical middle school cliche of being the new kid, trying to fit in, finding out who your friends are, navigating crushes, and finding yourself. The typical watered-down mean girls formula applies here. I really loved it though. I think a lot of young readers will be able to relate to it, while enjoying the fun classic tales style the book takes to tell the story. There are a few things I don't agree with like how the parents react and acknowledge Impy's feelings, but I also think that in the mind of a child this is exactly how things play out. So it works. It really captured this essence and the art style is fantastic. I'd really an entire sequel dedicated to the Renaissance Faire itself.

I loved this book so much. Imogene completely resonated with me as a character and struggled with so many of the things I've struggled with. As such, this one became a really personal read. So good.

Ag, Jamieson's portrayal of middle school is spot on (and a little too good a reminder for anyone no longer in middle school). I liked that Imogene learns that the only path is through as her true self and how well developed this cast of characters is. A lot to love here!

I didn't like it quite as much as Roller Girl, but it was a solid read.

I LOVED Roller Girl and was excited for this. I did find it engaging and I enjoyed the premise and the main character and her close friends and family. However, I found so many details unrealistic that I was distracted. I loved the story arc and conclusion.
