What really killed this book for me is that it was marketed as a romance. This is not a romance novel; it’s more of a general fiction/coming of age.
I didn’t guess enjoy the growth that we see in the main character. I wasn’t super onboard with Harriet at first, but after learning about her background, I learned to appreciate her actions and understand the meaning behind them.
I love that this book talked a lot about emotional abuse and manipulation and the dangers of social media. The conclusion to the main conflict was unexpected, but done in a satisfying way. It’s something I wish I had the balls to do if I ever found myself in a situation that warranted it.
As far as the romance goes, I either wanted more of it or for it to be completely manipulated. While I enjoyed Harriet and Cal and agreed that they should end up together, the author didn’t give us enough of them for it to warrant that ending. There was no reason for them to be saying “I love you” and all that by the end. It felt like insta-love even though it was at the end of the book because we didn’t get to see them fall in love. The book was about Harriet’s trauma from the emotional abuse of her ex-boyfriend; it wasn’t about love, so the declarations at the end just fell flat, like badly.

My first Mhairi McFarlane and I‘m feeling meh.
Does she have good writing? Yes.
Did I know that this was more women‘s fiction than romance? Yes.
But I‘m still disappointed at how bland this book was, I feel like there was said a lot and almost nothing at the same time. I literally couldn’t tell you what the plot was supposed to be. I feel like this book could’ve been so much better and more gripping if we focused more on involving a romance subplot because what the hell was that? That romance was literally non existent.
