I’m not sure I knew what I was getting myself into, but Harriet was sometimes interesting but most often frustrating to follow. The assumptions she makes with so little evidence throughout the book was a little wild, though she does grow into herself a bit more later.

This book was largely about her healing from past relationships, but I wish there was more about her love interest and their story/connection to each other. The end felt a little rushed to me!

Another great book by my favourite romcom writer. A real pleasure to read.

I realized that, because this account is relatively new, I haven’t reviewed any Mhairi McFarlane books on here. I’ve read Mad About You a couple of times, and this week I listened to the audiobook, so I figured it would be a good time to rectify that.

McFarlane is one of the few authors I judge by a different scale. All of her books are a solid 4.5-5 stars, so it’s not a matter of whether I like the book, it’s a matter of how much I liked the book in relation to her other books.

In the hierarchy of McFarlane books this wasn’t initially one of my favorites, but it’s definitely grown on me with each repeated read/listen. Harriet is a force to be reckoned with, long before she even realizes it. If I have a single complaint about this book, it’s that I wish we got the chance to know Cal better.

Most of McFarlane’s books are straddle the women’s fiction/romance line, this one being lighter on the romance angle than her others, but don’t let that deter you - come for the amazing character growth, stay for the side of swoon worthy roommate.

Obviously, I enjoyed this book. Hope you do too.
