I was pleasantly surprised I got halfway through the book and I found my new favorite author. I love the story I love her writing style and I'm definitely going to be picking up more of her books. I just wish that Ellie had gotten the justice that she deserves.

This was very good, but I was obviously not in the right mood for it because the bleakness of Kiewarra really got to me.

I’ll round up, but truthfully I think I’d give it 4.5 stars. I really enjoyed it, the ending was astounding and fast paced! But until then it was a little slow for me. Will definitely read Force of Nature!

[b:The Dry|27824826|The Dry (Aaron Falk, #1)|Jane Harper|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1456113132s/27824826.jpg|47804789] is an amazing combination of good story telling, palpable suspense and well written characters. The pace of the book was slow and steady, never boring. The small town setting was immaculately described by the author - how claustrophobic it could get, how everyone had to be dependent on others to survive, the gossip, and the rumours. Aaron Falk was an interesting protagonist, but more importantly, he wasn't hogging all the attention. The others in the small town of Kiewarra were so believable and real. The entire story, for that matter, was extremely real, and that was perhaps one of the best things about the book. The book had two sub-stories intertwined, and it was wonderfully narrated with Harper's lucid language. It manages to hold your interest throughout, and you can imagine the entire story right in your head.
5 Stars to [a:Jane Harper|556546|Jane Harper|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1470105315p2/556546.jpg] for her debut novel- more so because she piqued my interest in the future stories of Falk.
I'm certainly looking forward to the series

Oh my goodness, I love this book. I LOVE THIS BOOK. Everyone read it, right now.

I’ve found a new love from crime/thriller novels in the past year, and this tops them all. Jane Harper’s debut novel, The Dry is an incredible piece of writing.

Based in the fictional small-farming town of Kiewarra in Australia, the community is struggling with the consequences of an ongoing drought. But nothing can prepare them for when a small-town family winds up dead, leaving a newborn baby orphaned. The blame is pointed at the deceased patriarch of the family, Luke Hadler, in what appears to be a murder-suicide. Then comes Aaron Falk, Luke Hadler’s childhood friend, who left the town years ago after an incident involving their friend, Ellie. Returning as a friend, but also working as a federal agent, Aaron gets wrapped up in the Hadler’s case, as it becomes apparent all is not as it seems.

This book weaves from present to past, addressing current issues and the history of these two men. The setting created is just *amazing*. I found that while it wasn’t the most fast paced - and I usually only like to read fast paced books - the characters and setting created just makes you want to stay and read on. There wasn’t a point in this book that I felt bored, or the urge to put it down - hence why I finished it in just over a day.

I keep saying this book is amazing, but it honestly is. Although a debut novel, you would feel as if Harper has been writing forever, because she has such an amazing skill to create a storyline, characters, and an impeccable setting.
