Jesus Christ, guys.  What the fuck?

I thought I was more aware of the issues with the subject of this book--extreme misogynists.  However, I can see now that I only knew about a fragment of just how screwed up this all is, from mass violence acts commited by members of this community, with knowledge of others within these groups, to just the levels of seeming insanity by those caught in these more violent circles, and the disgusting tactics, habits, and mentalities of those who believe themselves the more tame versions.

While something I've always heard about, I think what I really needed was to see it spelled out, given specific case studies, and shown the magnitude of this trend of young males in our present world, to really understand its severity.

This book, for that reason, does its job perfectly, and I'm definitely glad I read this.

But for real, what the fuck, guys?

When I was a debate coach in college, I taught two boys who had clearly been radicalized by the rhetoric of online misogyny and it was so jarring and terrifying to see. It was disruptive, toxic, and harmful to everyone else who had to be near them, and I have no doubt it was the reason several of the female and queer students did not return the next year. They eventually dropped out before the season ended and I was deeply concerned. Concerned about what they might do, both to others and themselves. I'm not sure if parents, teachers, or institutions are ready for this group of radicalized young men, and Bates does such a good job articulating the challenges, implications, and solutions of the terrorist indoctrination these children are receiving.

Also lol was not expecting the Idles reference at the end.

This is a tough book to read- but one so prevalent today. While nothing was surprising (living as a woman in the age of the internet) this deep dive into the manosphere highlights the complexities of not only how women are viewed and treated by this movement but how men can be drawn in and kept hold in this patriarchal cult. It’s both terrifying to read and a sense of vindication for growing uneasiness. While it is relatively recently published I would love to read more by this author on how even in a couple years this space has evolved with the rise of “trad wives”. While I may not be the target audience this was still a strong read.
