An easy 5 stars. This was such a satisfying read. Is there unfinished business? Yes, but it's also the first in a series. I loved Vin's character development, I don't care that the formula of poor young kid with hidden unknown super powers is pretty standard for a fantasy novel. The plot twists were perfectly executed. I don't care for battle scenes and the ones in this am had me GLUED to the page. Gah. I can't wait to read the next one.

Content warnings for torture, castration, mentions of rape and forced breeding.

The world building of this book is cool, but the author doesn't quite succeed in avoiding info dumps. Sanderson hadn't quite learned how to weave in the details of a hard magic system or his gorgeous settings without getting in the way of the pacing.

Also, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the arc of one of the noble characters.
