I had to read this in high school. Horrible. Well written but horrible. I did not like reading this one bit. The story and characters threw me the wrong way.

"The Last of the Mohicans" dives into a fascinating historical backdrop but felt like a drag for me. While I get why it resonated back in the day, the story struggled to hold my attention, bogged down by lengthy passages that didn’t really add much. It’s clear that the adventure had potential, but I found it hard to connect with the characters and their journey. Maybe the movie captures the excitement better!
adventurous emotional medium-paced

For all my english teacher knows, I did, in fact, read this book

I was surprised by this. The prose was interesting and in places quite beautiful, very evocative of the time and place. I can see why they made a film of it as there is a lot of action though I bet the more subtle moments would have been sacrificed to cut it down as usual. I was more disappointed with the portrayal of the native American people and their 'savagery'. The only ones who were presented with anything approaching civility were those who were allied to the westerners and even then it was very much as a contrast to the 'uneducated' red skins. I suppose it was of its time but if I were someone with indigenous heritage I think I would find this hard to read and you can see how writing like this would not have helped to engender respect for these people. There are some images of great dignity, particularly at the very end of the novel, which helps to foreground the idea of the natives as mystical, serene creatures really rather than people. I would love to find something written by a descendant of these tribes to give a different perspective.

19. (not my cup of tea)
" I have heard it said that there are men who read in books to convince themselves there is a God. I know not but man may so deform his works in the settlement, as to leave that which is so clear in the wilderness a matter of doubt among traders and priests. If any such there be, and he will follow me from sun to sun, through the windings of the forest, he shall see enough to teach him that he is a fool, and that the greatest of his folly lies in striving to rise to the level of One he can never be equal, be it in goodness, or be it in power." Fairly dated with a lot of casual racism and sexism. Hawkeye is massively OP. The storyline is interesting and different. Would be interested what Americans think about this book?
adventurous tense medium-paced

Like most 19th century literature I've read, Mohicans was a bit of a struggle to navigate but a worthy one.
