I think James Fenimore Cooper's writing is beautiful. He's given me hope that I can actually enjoy classic literature after all. I've liked a few here and there, but haven't given too many a chance. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book!

i wasn’t really a fan of this book. you could replace the two female characters—who were main characters—with a nice pair of socks or any other inanimate object you could think of and the story would be exactly the same. there was more than one scene where cora and alice get kidnapped and they do absolutely nothing to stop themselves from being kidnapped except scream for help or faint.
i do like that it’s a slice into a world that seems long forgotten. however, the man who wrote this book really liked to hear himself talk. or at least that’s how it seems with how profound he seemed to think his observations were.
not a book i’d recommend, but also not the worst book i’ve ever read.

Honestly a pretty challenging read, mostly because I was generally confused who Cooper was talking about as he used about 5 names for each character, and then also descriptors ‘the Frenchman’ ‘the young man’ so I couldn’t really get a great grip on it. As it’s an historical fiction, I’m inclined to read up on this event more, to get a better view of the story.
Overall, unless you really need to read this account (which is valuable at least due to the perspective it was written and the time) I would find any other telling, or perhaps read other books. Just read other books.

Ive revisited this books more years than any other book Ive ever read. Not more times mind you, not even close, but more years. It says something about a book, and about me Id guess, that after all these years I can still go back to this book and feel some of the same feelings Id did when I was 12.

Worst depiction of the indigenous community. Also a lot of racism and sexism. Read in high school and lowkey not worth the read. If your that interested just read the spark notes or watch the film.
This was a tough "read" (listen actually) because of the old English used. But it was worth it! What a subtle classic tale of starcrossed love mixed with adventure and gallantry.
written in 1826 it is difficult to read given the verbose language and took awhile to get into the plot. the story continues many stereotypes but certainly the author tries to get readers to understand the beauty in interracial relationships. But these relationships are also dangerous. Racism will result in inevitable extinction of indigenous population- today there are 1500 mohicans left living in NE WI (where I was traveling while listening to the audiobook)- modeled after Daniel Boone which was a different perspective of native americans compared to the rhetoric of Andrew Johnson and he portrays a more complete and enlightened portrayal of native american-
I envisioned reading the trilogy but struggled so much with this that I will not be reading all three
