The aesthetic and writing style of the novel are quite fitting and hauntingly beautiful. I also thought the concept of lying was really interesting because now having finished the book I''m left unsure of several narrative details. I know they were liars but which were the lies?! The reason I haven't rated this book higher is because the characters aren't lovable. The adults are all the yucky parts of American capitalism, elitism, privilege etc. (I'm aware that's the point). And the children don't give us anything to root for. The main romance in the novel
, between Cadence(Cady) and Gat,
comes too quickly and dwindles for the rest of the book. It becomes an awkward after thought rather than a place for romantic tension to build.

I've heard a lot of this book. There's been a lot of hype about it, but also a lot of negativity and hate, so, like the nosy person I am, I wanted to try it myself.

The not so good  things:
So. The plot. I couldn't really get into it. It was kind of all over the place. Like, even now, after reading it only 45 minutes ago, I can't really find a clear way to describe it. It was too vague at times that I didn't even understand where they were.
The characters. Now, I am not really someone that minds a plot being quite weak if the characters are good, but I'm not really sure if these ones were enough to make up for that. I just couldn't connect with them at all. Any and all symphonies I had for them was purely because I wouldn't want anyone to go through what they had to. They just lacked a little bit of personality and life. I just wish that Cadence  especially had more character development because with all that was happening to her, she just lacked the emotion to really pull at my heartstrings like I know she could have.
The writing style. I really don't want to sound rude, but I just wasn't so keen on how e.lockhart portrayed certain things.
The name. I know this is really petty, it's just I don't really understand why it is called that.

The good things:
The ending. It was just so good. I broke my heart purely because of how tragic and sad it was. It made everything the characters ever did in the book make sense in the most saddest and twisted way. It was the sole as to why I would ever recommend the book to anyone.

Also, If you liked this book I would recommend The Cousins by Karen M.Mcmanus, as it had a similar idea, but, in my opinion, a better romance, plot and characters.

Thank you for reading my book xx 😊

This absolutely tore me into pieces. It was so beautifully written and I didn’t expect the ending at all. The characters felt so real. Some of the metaphors confused me, though, which took away some of the shock factor for the first plot twist for me because I found myself going back trying to figure out if it was real or not. The middle also slows down just a bit, but after the ending I realized why so many of the seemingly unimportant details in the middle were actually so important. This is one I would totally go back and reread to try and find all the clues I missed—
How they never went to dinner, they didn’t want Cady to jump off the rocks, the kids seeing ghosts, none of them receiving her gifts or responding to Cady’s emails, Aunt Carrie walking around at night, the lie about the donut shop, why Grandad kept calling her Mirren, etc etc.
I don’t think a book has ever made me cry as hard as this one did.
