Maybe it’s because they were published later - but in this collection, she really emphasizes that “our society’s sexual/gender/relationship norms are not human universals”. Not that that’s her main theme or anything (usually), it’s just nice to see a sci-fi author using her brain (and this collection is mostly from the 90s). Of course, she’s already practiced at jettisoning (or not taking for granted) other human “universals”.

Lots of other interesting themes, of course. All her books are interesting cultural and human exploration. It’s what draws me in.

Some of the short stories were kind of slow/dry, and had too much infodumping for the actual value/amount of story. I often find short stories hard to get into. But it’s a nice collection overall
