I loved Phoebe Robinson’s first audiobook, “You Can’t Touch My Hair, and Other Things I Still Have to Explain,” but this second book just felt like it really needed heavier editing. Each essay was overlong, and not snappy like the previous book. I found it tedious so bailed after about 20 percent. Your mileage may vary.

Bullet Review:

In some ways, this book was more serious than I was looking for (my life has been #HellaStressful #personally #professionally - to steal Phoebe’s style); that said, I think that makes this book far more impactful and hard-hitting than the previous book, digging into tough subjects (being black, being a woman, being a workaholic, being a person with money troubles).

Came to this with basically no knowledge of Phoebe's work, but was curious to check it out. I appreciated the subjects she covered and some of the stories & lessons she had to share - hence the 2.5 stars - but found her writing style off-putting and humor lacking. :-/ The frequent use of hashtags, the fake URLs, the shortening of words to create made-up slang versions, the constant metaphors via pop culture references, the tangents upon tangents... it just didn't land for me. Others mentioned this working more in audiobook form, and yeah, in retrospect, I can see that potentially being a better way to go.

Binged her new show so now I need to binge all her books. This was very fun. I read one of her other books previously but I listened to this one which I prefer because her voice and intonation really add to the comedy.

Okay, I thought I took way longer to read this than I did but now I’m seeing the date and it’s not too bad. I relate to Phoebe a lot and her book really had me thinking about things in life. If you know nothing about her, I think this will be hard to get through because of all her tangents, but they were entertaining for the most part. I enjoyed the essays and I’m glad I read it.
