WOW Ward really created kinda the perfect Gothic setting. Reminds me of Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle, as well as The Thirteenth Tale. Immaculate ghost story, with intertwined intergenerational narratives.

Although we’ll written and descriptive and an intriguing story I could not finish this book as I am not a fan of vivisection.
Will try some again f her other books

DNF at 14% couldn't get into it, the overabundance of "papa" just got on my nerves too much. No rating.

Struggled so hard to get through this. Too many characters, too many timelines, and I didn’t find any of the characters compelling enough to care. I’m a huge fan of Catriona Ward’s other work, so this was a huge disappointment.

I cannot stop thinking about the ending. I knew it was coming but I cannot stop thinking about the ending. This book was a slow start for me--these period horrors normally annoy me, but I love Ward's other novels so I pushed through and... now I, too, an haunted by her.

Well that was intense.

I love Ward’s “Last House On Needless Street” so I picked this up. Typically a fan of gothic horror, this felt sloggish and cumbersome. Often using too much flowery language to describe one small point that is non-essential. Told from different narrators, which typically I enjoy, this felt weighted and the characters have zero time to develop with any awareness of what’s occurring. I’d skip this one and go for Needless Street instead.
