Incredibly, incredibly slow. And I'm not a big fan of slow stories, but this one really captivated me. The deep rooted rage, the confusion and insanity, the betrayals, the cowardice and awful acts out of selfishness or ignorance, and above all, fear. Everywhere. At all times. Would recommend to all gothic horror enjoyers.

This is a masterpiece of gothic storytelling. The prose is completely enchanting. This is everything you need from gothic horror and then some. Gut wrenching, and horrifying and raw and ruthless.

Se nota que es su primera novela. Ojo, que eso no quita que esté bien escrito y que Catriona es una reina del suspense y del terror, pero se nota que es el germen del que luego saldrán sus novelas posteriores donde depura la técnica. Han habido diálogos y escenas que me chirriaban un poco, así como los personajes que ni fu ni fa, y quizás de los que me he leído es el más predecible, aún así he disfrutado un montón y he devorado el libro como si fuese un paquete de pipas.
Yikes! A very twisted (in every possible sense of the word) turn-of-the-19th-century gothic tale with multiple narrators and perspectives of a multi generational family curse wreaking havoc on the inhabitants of the manor house, who are much feared and despised by the local villagers. This book was a warm up for my next Book Club read, also a psychological thriller.
I thought the pace was slow, and the elements of the plot were a bit disjointed. There's a lot of disappointing elements. The writing, however beautiful, made a complicated plot almost inaccessible at points. One of those books I had to force myself to finish.
Good gothic haunted house fare. I was starting to get frustrated with the end, but...an excellent twist saved it.
