I'm kinda obsessed with Catriona Ward right now??? I usually read within the very specific niche of cosmic horror, but I absolutely adored Little Eve and decided to give this novel, which falls pretty definitively in the gothic category, a chance. This is an incredibly complex, non-linear novel, and there wasn't a word or plot line out of place. Authors struggle with continuity with only a single, linear plot line. How on earth is this Ward's debut???

Great twists and turns

I'm giving this two stars because I liked the concept that it was trying to do. However, I didn't like the book, on the whole.

The first part of the book is ok, as it switches between Iris and Charles's points of view. However, ultimately, Charles is irrelevant and had he not been in the story, we would have had a shorter but, perhaps, better book.

The last part of the book... what a confusing mess. We have multiple points of view, jumping around various points in history - again, most of which we could have been spared.

I'd more or less worked out the twist by the time it occurred, but I liked what the author did with it. I'm still confused over the ending though; I buy the concept of the twist, but then it seemed like it was irrelevant. Surely, it was always like that (in which case, the ending would have arrived sooner) or it was never like that (in which case, we'd have needed a different ending).

All in all, I'm disappointed by this book.

Creepy gothic horror at its best, atmospheric and gloomy, but beautiful writing and imagery. I enjoyed this intelligent book and I feel that it would lend itself to multiple readings to fully explore the nuances. Intriguing and disturbing, but well worth reading.

whereas Ward's latest novel, THE LAST HOUSE ON NEEDLESS STREET was utterly captivating, this one felt a bit too long for me, but that partially had to do with the diction throughout—old timey language just isn't my thing. But go read NEEDLESS STREET, that was amazing.

A thrilling gothic tale about love, death, and suffering.

While I enjoyed my time with the book and found myself in tears at the end, I think the author overuses simile and metaphor to where it becomes an exhausting repetition toward the end.

From what I understand though, this was Ward’s debut. That fact is astonishing, because outside of those minor writerly foibles, this book was quite a triumph.
