Short story, well written and with an interesting twist on the time travel paradox, but it is somewhat predictable towards the end of the story.

For a while, seems like it might be little more than a novelty, a ludicrous story used to construct a clever paradox. There's still more wit in the storytelling than in Dick's "Autofac", which I read around the same time, and the storytelling is much more engaging, but it seemed like it was similarly going to end up as the type of sci-fi "story" which exists merely as a vehicle to explain a concept without exploring it.

That isn't entirely fair, because the "mind-blowing" elements of this one stick out, but more important is the internal monologue from which the title is taken. A sense of alienation so profound - we are our own histories.

This was a quick and fairly interesting read. I think it was probably more shocking to science fiction readers back when it was written. I'm no stranger to time paradoxes. I felt like it got kind of rushed at the end, and since I was expecting almost all of the "twists", it really only confirmed what I'd already thought would happen. I did get a little stuck on the end, with the Mistake of 72 and that line about the zombies, but after reading a few plot breakdowns I believe I was overthinking it and seeing an apocalypse where there was none. Alas.
