5/5 stars

"'Thank you, Usij.' 'Oh?' 'If it were not for your Savul, my brother would not have been killed, and I could have lived the rest of my life oblivious to my true abilities. You are the reason I am standing here, and I am the reason you will die today.'"

I really loved The Bone Witch and The Heart Forger did not disappoint. The book picked up right where The Bone Witch left off, alternating from the present, Tea raising the daeva to go to war,to the past, Tea in her story to the bard.

The royals in some of The Eight Kingdoms are falling prey to a sleeping sickness. No one knows the origin of the sickness, but the Heart Forger suspects foul play. The Faceless have been much too quiet for much too long. As Tea navigates her duties as a dark asha, and then some due to the dwindling number of dark asha, she struggles to separate truth from falsehood as she interrogates the imprisoned Faceless, Aenah. Tea suspects the elder asha for having nefarious motives in their dealings with the dark asha. When the Heart Forger disappears during his trip to Daanoris to examine a princess who has fallen under the sleeping sickness, Tea and her friends must put aside their suspicions to find the Heart Forger before it's too late. Only the Heart Forger knows how to cure the sleeping sickness, and if he isn't found, the victims of the sleeping sickness might become the key to an even darker plot.

"The dead do not need rest, only the living believe that the grave can bring peace."

I love, love, LOVE the character development in this book. It is incredible to see Tea go from the impulsive, headstrong, and somewhat selfish teen to a strong, still impulsive, selfless woman. I love her internal struggle with the dark, she is a flawed heroine and she is so human. I really do not enjoy when the MCs are so pure and selfless, I prefer an MC that is relatable, who struggles between their desires and what is right. The contrast between young Tea and older, sadder, and wiser Tea is significant, and refreshing. Did I mention I love the character development?

The one thing I did find lacking in The Heart Forger, as opposed to The Bone Witch, is the world building. It's almost as if Chupeco felt that there was enough world building in The Bone Witch to compensate for the lack of it in The Heart Forger. The Bone Witch was so immersive, the places and culture so interesting, but it drops off significantly in The Heart Forger. It would have been incredible to see all of that descriptiveness in this book, especially in Daanoris, but it was not to be.

I cannot wait for the next book in this series, I recently saw the title has been released and I am stoked, The Shadowglass, because Tea is going to mess some people up! The Heart Forger had plenty of action, and I ate it up, but the foreshadowing of the intense action that is going to take place in The Shadowglass has me chomping on the bit. I can't wait to see the daeva WHOOP SOME BUTT!

Also, I want an Azi. I love how it can be so calm and adorable even purring EEK! one moment and breathing fire and scourging your enemies the next. Exactly what I need when I get road rage. I'd like to see your Prius take on my Azi.

Lastly, while refreshingly free of many YA tropes, like insta-love, The Heart Forger does contain my favorite trope. At the risk of spoiling it, I will tell you
Spoilerenemies to lovers! WOOT WOOT!

Do yourself a favor, read The Heart Forger, drink a cup of Tea (haha see what I did there?), and go vanquish some Faceless! You won't regret it!
