For a person who doesn't really like slashers... I really liked this! I don't know a lot about the genre and the movies that were discussed, but the way that this book was formatted was really accessible. It was kind of like she was writing a thesis about slashers, so she was explaining why things are the way they are in the genre. And all around her, a real-life slasher is happening. This was fast paced and I read this in just over 24 hours. I've read from Stephen Graham Jones in the past and didn't enjoy it as much so I was cautious going into this. But I was hooked from chapter one!

I'll start off by saying that I've read some really good SGJ books, but they have all been short/novella format. I really think that's where he thrives. This book is LONG. And the chapters are LONG. And it's mostly just the main character rambling, and she really isn't likeable either. I really tried to keep going, but it just wasn't worth it to me anymore.

Add this to things I forgot to log for a month until I cleaned out my work bag.
Jones proves himself as a true genre man with this entry which delights in it's skewing of tropes and referentialism. Funny, emotional, and often surprising Jones fully embodies the "write what you know" philosophy and gives us a final girl we can't help but root for and a setting and side cast whose deaths can't help but dread.

SGJ nails the slasher with this one. Can’t wait to finish the trilogy.
