So in th beginning I will admit I was mildy confused with how things were going adn where they were going to end up. I was reading things on a surface level until page 164-186 its very clear that is not actually a slasher book. It is in the way that its not. From the reviews that I have seen it a central complaint among people who didnt like the book seems to be Jades "rambling", facts and relating everything to slasher films. Thats her coping mechanism, as Letha says "you were at your most vulnerable your most broken ... and you reached out for the first thing you saw, held it as close as you could like an armour. Like it could protect you."
Now I know the average person doesn't understand the psychology and effects of truama, but if you do eveything makes senseher rambling and constant talk of slashers is self soothing. look at when she does it. For example: At the fire, directly after running out of her house where her father and his friend who is also her boss were drinking "six beers deep into a night that probably going to take a whole case to get through. after her fathers friend says "hey, I got a carrot you can -" her dad laughed in APPRECIATION. Both grown "men" make to get physical after she tries to verbally stand up for/ defend her self. she ran from the house put on frost covered clothes and thought about how she will tell the seriff her dad was drinking and kicked her out like last time. already in the first few pages the pattern of behavior is laid out.
If you notices she "hooks onto" shooting glasses and Letha becasue they are 2 poeple who saw past her rambling for what it is a plea and a coping mechanism. If you get all the blue curtain represent sadness then you can take the paranormal twist to be a manifestation. something come alive to do what was needed for revenge.the mention of Stacy and the talk of the litter girl in the letter that JAde gave to Letha were part of what clued Letha in to what Jade had been through. there can be serval parallels drawn between Jade and Stacey also. Jade is a girl that was molested by her father and abandoned by her mother forced to continue livivng with said abuser. slasher films were her lifeline.
I could keep drowning on but Ill leave it here. I didn't annotate the first time and I definetly regret that. I will do a Reread in the furture and annote and probably have a million other things to say.

I honestly enjoyed this one!
Not my fav SGJ book but it’s solid. I’d say it’s reaaaaaalllyyy slow in the first 75% but it kept me hooked! The last 25% after Jade wakes up it goes fucking break neck speed man. It just doesn’t stop. I will be reading the second one! Hoping it’s a bit more fast paced consistently. I did find Jade to be rather annoying but what 18 year old isn’t?

So much of this should have been edited out. It dragged and dragged.
Also, a supernatural killer was very disappointing.

Graphic: Self harm, Suicide attempt
Moderate: Rape
This had so much potential yet I find myself DNFing at page 55. I was really hoping this would suck me in like other books with questionable beginnings but this character and the writing really turned me away. I was excited for a horror slasher with native representation and all I got was a representation. This truly taught me to read more than the summary before committing and buying a book :(.
in short, too many issues with the plot, the PAGES of the characters internal monologue where all she does is gush about facts I already knew about slasher films and just not get to the point!!
and don’t get me started with the amount of trigger warnings this book needs, like a suicide attempt, child rape and child abuse ??? like come on, what are we doing here?

3.5 rounded down
Say one thing about Jade, say she's unreliable. As a narrator, as a person, as a friend. The story starts slow and you start to doubt this fever dream that is jade's mind. I'm still not sure what was actually going on, but I'm invested.
As a fan of slashers, this was a fun read. As a fan of fever dreams, this was a crazy ride. I fell in love with Letha and wanted to punch Jade in the face so many times.
Will definitely be continuing the series
Edit. I can't help but feeling that letha is kind of into/in love with Jade. I mean.. [SPOILERS] she cares about her for apparently no reason, she asks her out, asks her to sleep over, etc. She just treats her so sweetly, am I crazy?
