DNF'ed at page 93.

I wouldn't have a single thing to say if this book was billed as a YA novel. It could've been a perfectly serviceable YA novel! But no, they had to pretend this was written for adults, and now I'm mad.

The first chapter piqued my curiosity, but our main character killed the cat. Jade our main character, is identical to the protagonist of an Avenged Sevenfold fanfiction I read when I was 14, down to the cheesy mean-dad intro and the regular updates on her hair color. Her dialogue is unnatural, her inner thoughts inane, and the constant references to slasher movies are painfully shoe-horned.

Jade is such a wonderful protagonist and every moment in her head is a privilege

3.5 stars - I'm glad that I ended up giving this another shot. Definitely recommend reading this via audio book. Can't wait to read Don't Fear the Reaper!

A slasher with real character development, emotional stakes and complicated themes? Yes please. Not that it wasn't a challenge to read at times, because it absolutely was. SGJ's amorphous stream of consciousness remains intact here and it's both a perfect fit for this subgenre and also one that requires a lot of patience and trust from the reader. If you can provide all that though, you're in for an all-timer of a "third reel body dump", as Jade Daniels would put it. Absolutely electric finale and one of the best endings to a horror story I've ever come across. One of the rare slashers that I'll be turning over in my head for quite a while.
