Woah okay thoughts.
Pros: interesting “hell” dimensions, unique world building, romance sub-plot, training sequences!!!
Cons: too much battle🤪, not enough dragons, slightly no idea what is happening

I had been hearing a lot of praise about this book. When my mood for a good dragon book came up and my husband wanted to read it with me , I thought why not. I give this book 3 stars. It’s pretty solid, however it is not really a “dragon” book, though talk of dragons is present.

This book felt like what people who request books for their sons would be looking for (though I believe anyone can read anything!). Not in a bad way and obviously anyone could read it. I did. It’s very to the point and lots of fighting. So so much fighting. Felt my face wincing a lot from the descriptions of stabs and broken bones lol. I don’t think I find to many books like this so that’s why i used this description (for people who ask for these types).
I did like the book, but it made me wonder if THIS is more what people mean when they ask is a plot character driven or plot driven. This was a hundred percent plot driven book. I also think it’s a great book to discuss, especially with young adults. It’s one that will keep them engaged and still pull out societal themes that teachers tend to use literary “classics” for and I really enjoyed that aspect . For example I saw :
-Tokenism
-Indication of how you can never really be friends/have a real relationship with someone you are subservient to
-the unfairness of caste systems
-both sides of the coin of pride
-how some allies are only your ally up to the point that they benefit
-how in order to grow you have to be willing to push yourself, maybe even break yourself to build back up stronger.
-how you can become so singularly focused you can destroy yourself before reaching the goal
-if you don’t learn you repeat
-you are more than they tell you you are !
-how those in power will work against their own interest just to keep a ”lower class” subservient
And so many more . Like I said, great discussion book
There were some “emotional” parts in the book but they were more so just there, compared to to other books that dig deeper and explore it. Not bad, again, just not character driven in those areas as much as it COULD be.
My favorite character was Hadith! That’s my dude. I think I would vibe with him. Also, Aren is a great father.
Favorite scene was where Dasso watches Tau lol.
I also looked up and learned a lot of new words , though I’d never dare to pronounce them lol. Please note: there is a glossary in the back !!! I didn’t realize that fact lol.
I’m not jumping into book two right away but I do plan to read it. I want to see where Tau.
