wow what an amazing start to this series!

Evan winters knows how to write a battle scene for sure. His world building is well done and the characters he writes are so natural in their personalities.

The end to this book has left me desperate to start book 2 which I will be very soon!

Prose could be a bit dry but the characters and narrative were really strong
adventurous dark emotional

I felt like this book was on the dry end… very much from the male gaze which was tough for me… just continuous fighting, training… then fighting and then training… that’s all I felt the hook really was. Happy I finished it, but I won’t read the next one. Plus everyone he loves dies… how sad!!

Why I picked this up: Heard good things about Rage of Dragons through BookTube and it has been sitting on my TBR pile for ages. Saw it available on my Spotify subscription, thought I’d jump in.

Genre: Epic fantasy
Tone: A classic with a fresh, African-inspired world.

Plot: My name is Tau Solarin. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

Pacing: I had trouble getting on board initially. I didn’t care for the prologue and the first 20% of the story was stifling—mostly that had to do with the caste system/lack of agency. It’s a necessary slog, but once that was over and the story got moving, there was no stopping the rage train.

Prose: 3rd person limited, multi-POV with a main character focus. Filtered language, but it didn’t affect my immersion too badly. Classic. I normally struggle with the bloated “epic” prose, but this was lean and easy to read.

World: African inspired. Bronze and bone weaponry. Matriarchal society—only women can call on magic, which involves calling on the forces of a demon plane (pretty badass.)

Characters: Tau has a one-track mind for revenge, which goes through an arc. There were about 3 other characters I cared about.

Conflict: Caste system inequalities, combat school, and Tau’s quest for revenge impacting his social life. Lots of action, not too gory.

Overall enjoyment: Great. 4.5 stars. I had concerns about Rage of Dragons being over-hyped, and thought that might be the case in the early pages, but I stuck with it and ended up liking it. I’d recommend this book to all readers of adult fantasy to at least try.
