There is little world building, so it’s a bit difficult to understand all the new concepts and words.

Wow! Gripping and intense

I don't write reviews - for anything really - but this was so powerful, I'm compelled to do so. Although a bit slow starting out, we are quickly acclimated to the world and its environs. It takes a bit of brain-power to get used to the naming conventions, but they are so consistent and well-used in context, it becomes second nature by the time I was 50 pages in. The exploration of castes and the development of the magic was expertly done.
Honestly, it took a while for me to finish because I had trouble getting into the story at first. The main character was a bit whiny and I found it hard to sympathize sometimes. However, this development is so necessary to have the full character arc come to fruition. Once the initial introduction is complete and we move into the next phase, things really pick up - both in pace and, for me, interest.
I found it incredibly difficult to put down for the last quarter of the book and especially the last few chapters. I audibly gasped and cheered and choked back tears as the final moments of this first installment played out on the page.
I cannot wait for the next one (I'm writing this review before I've even checked to see if it is already released *fingers crossed*). I give this book my highest recommendation to anyone who enjoys fantasy fiction and strong character-driven adventure dramas. Five stars!

The beginning 25% of the book was insanely rushed. It made everything—Tau’s trauma from the battle in Daba, his tense relationship with Jabari, his relationship with Aren and rage over Aren’s death, Anya’s rape and her and her family’s murder, etc. feel less impactful. The characters’ tendency to over-explain things to each other (“(Name) don’t you know our world works like xyz”) was very annoying too. The magic system was fine though, Tau's relationship with Zuri was actually sweet, and all of the fighting scenes were exciting. Overall this was a very solid debut novel.

Very exciting, like an action movie. A lot of great fight scenes and battles.  The main character has a believable will and is well complimented by the other characters. I’m unsure if I’ll read the prequel since the story feels concluded.
