The Omehi people had to flee their homeland, and since have been fighting the locals of their new home for the past 200 years. Omehi society has become centered around the military, and there are some Gifted who can empower men, send enemies temporarily to the underworld, and even call upon dragons. The main character of the story, Tau, is part of the lower caste. He seeks to serve in the military for as little time as possible so that he may return home safely and marry the girl he loves. However, a noble kills his father, and Tau devoted his life to rising in the military to take vengeance.
This story is very strongly military based and dark. There are many fight scenes, but they are done in such a way that they are intriguing rather than repetitive. Tau goes to exceptional lengths to achieve his revenge. Tau can be a bit frustrating at times, particularly because he has a one-track mind focused on revenge and not really thinking much through, but you can't help but wonder how things will turn out for him.
The unique setting and magic system is what I feel is the strongest point of this story. The whole idea of an underworld filled with demons, and Gifted people empowering/hindering others is done in such a clever way. The twists at the end of the book setup for a strong plot in book 2, and I am fascinated to see how the story continues.

One of the most addictive books I've ever read, and the audio book narration with the African accent is making it even more enjoyable. Looking forward to Evan's promising writer career, and the stories to come.

I really enjoyed this story even though it took me a long time to finish it. This story is packed with action and pushing yourself past your limits and is heavy fantasy based. This was my first advance fantasy and I’m happy I listened to the audiobook rather than tried to read it. I think I would’ve gotten lost with some of the terminology, by trying to see how to pronounce everything lol the notes of romance was a nice touch to the story, even though Tau was blinded by rage most of the time, I’m happy I read this story and would recommend anyone to read it as well

Absolutely great start to the series, I like that Tau had flaws in his impulsiveness and single-mindedness. His drive for revenge had him going to extreme lengths and making questionable choices - with consequences. Definitely excited to see where this series goes.
Listennnnn, I wasn’t in the mood to be reading a GoT kind of book yet. Timing wasn’t right but quality book
