Honestly one of the best books I've read in a long time, especially considering it is a debut novel. If I could find it ten stars I would

This one felt like your typical action packed blockbuster summer movie. It's a fast paced, very very action focused book and an enjoyable read, but ultimately lacking depth and charm.

The characterization felt rather poor. Tau is the 'angry boi obsessed with revenge' and that's it... no more traits, no more personality to flesh out the main character, nothing.
Zuri in particular was the blandest of them all, with the charm and personality of a needy piece of chalk. That romance with Tau... not a fan at all. And the other characters were not that much better.

The banter and dialogue in general felt very contrived and second-rate, the prose was serviceable at best and again... there was just too much action. At some point it felt like there was little to no down time between fights.

A slow first installment to a war fantasy series. Most of the book was spent developing Tau's skills as a warrior and solidifying his commitment to revenge. The battle at the end of the novel is why I picked this up in the first place. I'm hoping now that Tau's character and abilities are established, the next installment will dive straight into the thick of it.

This is my second attempt to read this book. I had heard good things and had given up about 100 pages in due to pacing, however I revisited it and I’m so glad I did. This book has a slow start to build to the action but it’s worth the wait in my opinion. Tau is a pretty complex protagonist. You want to root for him on his quest for vengeance but his flaws show through the cracks.  The reviews are correct in saying you’d like this if you like Game of Thrones. As a fan, it goes without saying that much like the show, don’t get too attached to a lot of the characters you meet.

Read this for book club, my friend gave up the book so I did too. It's not bad but a bit slow for me and I'm not in the mood for it right now.
