I did the audiobook version of this one.
It was a whirlwind of a ride! Things seemed to move very very quickly (it was only a 16 hour audiobook which seemed short for the amount of lore or world building I feel like it could have benefitted from).
With that said, I truly felt Tau's rage and his bottomless drive for revenge. I love a good revenge plot and this one is completely fueled by that!
I already started book 2 and I think once the series is complete and we have a full understanding of the intricacies and mysteries of this world that I will really appreciate how great it was! But tbd! 🥰

What witchery is this shit. I usually stay away from epic fantasy because the length, cast of characters and battles usually combine to bore me. Winter *had* me with his battle scenes from the open. I cared. A lot. Even when our hero was wrong, I was right there, heart pounding and all.
What I need more than anything is to see Tau move further along his character arc in book 2 or else I might end up beyond frustrated. But good gat-damn does this book serve.

The first half of the book was quite repetitive and I’ve started to lose interest. The second half made me give the book 4 stars. Overall, I had to put the book down and read something else.. but the end was decent. A lot of fighting, a lot of Tay being hard headed and no one actually stepping up to say something to him. I think the world itself has so much potential and the magical system, as well as the separation of the castes - so much potential to make the storyline epic. So, in short.. worth the read.
Serious page-turner. I haven't been that into a novel since Red Rising. It mirrors Red Rising in that the POV is from someone seeking vengeance, and that the plot feels often familiar at the start. But once it gets going it really never stops. Tau is a refreshing character because it isn't often an author allows such rage to really go unchecked like he does here. Can't wait for the sequels, and do yourself a favor and listen to the audiobook. The narration is incredible and I don't know that I would have continued past the first couple chapters if not for his narration.
