The blurb I saw marketed this as being similar to Taken, which... yes, but add a heaping dose of Hostel. I found this to be splatterpunk-lite and if I had known it was, I wouldn't have read it. Descriptions of sexual assault are lurid and salacious, as if we're supposed to be aroused by these events. I could understand that (grudgingly) if we were getting villain POVs, but we're not. I also hated the flashbacks to Vietnam. The issue isn't that they were gruesome, but that it seemed like those passages were meant to make us feel sympathy for the main character. It had the complete opposite effect for me. But maybe a feature of whatever genre this is is a protagonist you have to root for, but don't actually want to.
