Oh man, I have a lot of feelings about this book rn but I’ll try my best to put them into words.
First of all, I was a bit confused while reading because I didn’t realize this novel and the others were made BEFORE the Netflix TV series— oops. So I expected them to follow more closely to the series and when that didn’t happen I became super confused/concerned for where this was going. So yeah I was pretty biased while reading so I’m trying to keep that in mind while I concoct this review.
The novel on its own is pretty decent. I liked Naia and her determination and thought her and the song teller were a great duo. I was a bit disappointed that it took until the very end of the book for them to reach the castle and face-off against a certain skeksis. The descriptions were great. My favorites were definitely the descriptions of the skeksis. How they looked and moved painted a perfect picture of them in my mind. I also loved learning more about the Gelfling. Like gills? What!? That opened up a whole world for me and now I’m thinking about Gelfling villages in the bottom of the ocean and how cool that would be.
This is definitely the kind of book where you need to have some prior knowledge of the source material going in tho so it’s not something I recommend new fans tackle.
Compared to the Netflix series, idk how I feel about the book. Naia feels very different in this than the Netflix series— arguably a completely different character. She feels younger and less aware of the world outside her clan. I still like her tho. I think I preferred the order of things the tv series took (Naia finding Rian in the podling village and then going to the castle for her brother). It felt more natural to me.
I’m still going to check out the rest of the series. I’m sure I’ll have a bit more fun with it now that I know this isn’t directly following along with the TV series

I enjoyed the story, but I don’t think it stands on its own from the rest of the lore of the show and movie. I kept comparing it to it’s source material and found myself a bit disappointed. I didn’t particularly care for any of that characters, and felt like there could have been more to the story.

I am loving this book! I’ve been a fan of the dark crystal since my dad showed me the original move now to have these books and the Netflix show I’m so happy.
This books follows Naia, and her search for her bother it’s a wonderful accompaniment to the show!
It fleshed out the world and lore so much and it’s great seeing all the different gelflings!!
It is not an exact company to the show so go in expecting that, things differ a bit as this was written before the show was even a thing.
Still awesome and amazing a must read for dark crystal lovers
4.5/5
