Nice ot read the story that started it all. A cracking good tale with a certain charm in a lot of the language and character goals. The Hardy boys keep referring to their friends as "Chum" and want ot solve the case to put the money in the bank.

These originals add substantial depth to the prose. I've read that the justification for the 1959 revisions and the subsequently more popular editions of these stories was the removal of crude racial and social stereotypes, and to accommodate the changing role of women. Of course they were sold rather on the premise of an update reflecting advancements in the methods detectives use. I decry the censorship not as a transgression of an individual's artistic expression, although one could certainly argue that McFarlane's work was vandalized, but rather as a revision of our own history and an offense to our cultural heritage. The atrocities of our culture's past aren't sacred, but it is foolish to think they can be wiped out simply by recompiling a banal story around a similar plot line that is void of substance, good or bad. The result is to effect something of a mind-numbing dystopia.

This was a re-read for me and I loved it. The Hardy Boys were the first books I ever truly got into and I can't wait to continue on with the series again. My only problem I had we're with the female characters. They were all underdeveloped especially Mrs. Hardy. It was unrealistic that their mom would just let them go off and do dangerous things without worrying. But like I said I loved it and I can't wait to continue!

Thank you Netgalley and Dove Publication for the free ebook copy in exchange for a review. The Hardy Boys was a trend when I was young along with Nancy Drew. Being a girl, my mom buys me Nancy Drew so this is my first dabble into the Hardy Boys. It feels like a Nancy Drew mystery. It is perfect for middle grade students but not exactly for adults. Spoilers ahead! I have some questions about the theft that was left unanswered. The ending was also a let down, no confrontations or whatever. It was okay but lacks excitement.
