The story is compelling, but utterly weighed down by meandering, run-on writing.

I did not enjoy reading this book. Not at all. Absurdism/surrealism is not a style of fiction I enjoy and that’s this book to a T. That said I can totally see why it’s considered a pivotal book in the dystopian Fiction cannon and a proper tour de force.

That doesn’t mean I had to like it though. Hoping the book club discussion redeems it a little.

I don’t completely understand what I just read but it was very original and the prose was beautiful. It’s not perfect but it is amazing. Definitely will reread it.

I hated every second of reading this. There is a fine line between satire and simply reproducing garbage writing done by straight white men.

Her collection of short stories "The Bloody Chamber" is by far my favourite book of all time, and I knew this would not add up to it, but I was still enthralled by the book, although it was confusing and difficult in parts. The tale of a post-apocalyptic world, and one in which women are brutal, misandrist and there is a terrible civil war going on. A professor is captured and turned into a woman against his will, and goes on a journey involving a one-legged man and his harem, an under-age hooker and a beautiful film star. This is by no means an easy read, and it jumps around so quickly it's hard not to feel dizzy. I believe Carter is at her literary best when she is writing short stories - her sumptuous imagery and plots work best in short bursts than in novels, but this is worth the read nonetheless.
